About Michel Basbous

Michel Basbous (1921-1981) was a Lebanese sculptor who was one of the first students to enroll at the Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in 1945. After achieving success in Beirut, he moved to Paris in 1950 and studied under the famous sculptor Zadkine. He returned to Lebanon in 1956 and settled in his native village of Rachana where he created a public festival to promote arts and culture. Basbous fought for the dissemination of sculptures in public spaces, and his works can be found in various museums and public places around the world. He was a charismatic man who experimented with different genres, styles, sizes, and media, and is considered a pioneer of modern sculpture in Lebanon and the Arab world.
